Most Important Weapons of Choice for US Navy Seals

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

As can be imagined, the array of weaponry that is used by Navy SEALs is extensive and sophisticated. This state-of-the-art weaponry is not only made in the United States, but is sourced from all over the world.

Most weaponry has been specifically designed for the use of SEALs or the Special Operations Forces in general. This elite group of warriors has the freedom to choose Navy SEALs weapons with a specific set of parameters; this includes the primary as well as secondary weapons.

Standard Issues

Weapons like the highly accurate M4A1 Carbine are standard issue for all Navy SEALs; as they are known for their versatility. Pistols are also commonly used, but they are more of a back up weapon then a front end weapon.

The Weaponry

Navy SEALs weaponry, is mission-dependant, and as, aforementioned, there is large amount of choice available for them. Given below is a small list of weapons, which is representative of what the SEALs use.

The Handguns

MK23 Mod 0.45 cal SOCOM Offensive Handgun

This is an offensive handgun, specially developed for U.S Special Operations Command. Very soon, its inherent capabilities saw it being used frequently as a service pistol. The MK 23, offers a Navy SEAL unmatched accuracy and comes good on all operational requirements that one expects from combat handgun.

M11 Sig Sauer P-228

This is one of the favorite weapons of the Navy SEALs as its light, has deadly accuracy and its small size, makes it easy to conceal. It is a semi-automatic pistol that is recoil operated and can fire a 9mm NATO round.

The Sniper Rifle

M14 Sniper Rifle

Its magazine fed, semi-automatic, and gas operated, and has seen an active service use for a very long time. Its supremely effective even at a distance beyond 500 meters, and can fire 750 rounds per minute. No wonder, a Navy SEAL still swears by the gun.

M82A1 Heavy Sniper Rifle

This is a heavy sniper rifle and is very effective against targets like parked aircrafts, trucks, or ammunition dumps, radar cabins, etc. Militarily it is known as a “Special Applications Scoped Rifle” or SASR.

The Assault Rifle

M4A1 with SOPMOD Accessory Kit

It’s the weapon of choice, which is used by all Navy SEAL operators. The Navy in conjunction with the U.S Special Operations Command or USSOCOM was instrumental in developing what is known as the Special Operations Peculiar, or SOPMOD, Accessory kit that made this rifle even more effective, lethal, and versatile.

The Machine Gun

M60E3 Machine Gun and MK43 Mod 0

This is a light machine gun; whose operational features are that it is gas operated and air cooled. A disintegrating M13 link belt provides it with a 7.62mm round firing power.

Introduced way back in 1957, this weapon is still used by Navy SEALs, although, in its many variants. The M60E3 is a lightweight version whereas the M60E4 is a designated MK43 Mod 0 version.

This is just an overview of the weapons that are used by Navy SEALs and is by no means the complete list. However, one thing is certain; all the weapons are deadly and provide all the help the SEALs need, in their dangerous missions.

Avoid the Shotgun Approach to Marketing Your Business

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

Are you doing everything you should be in the marketing of your business or is there something that’s slipping through the cracks that could bring you a ton more money?

Are you spending your dollars wisely or hap hazzardly to which ever sales rep walks in the door each day?

Do you have an actual marketing plan? These are some of the questions you want to be asking yourself AND THEN – figure out how to fix this so you are making SMART MARKETING DECISIONS.

If you’re like most small business owners, you get so busy working IN your business that when it’s busy, you don’t concentrate much on marketing and advertising. In fact many clients I’ve spoken with have said they often tell their advertising sales reps “just run the same ad as last month” when they call for new ad copy. They do this because they don’t have time to think of what to do next.

But if you PLAN out your ads ahead of time, making sure your headlines, offers and messages are timely AND that they accurately and effectively will make your target market take notice and act on your ad then they will be much more effective and give you better results.

Or when you have clients you don’t make time to market for new ones until those ones are gone; then you wonder “where did they all go? I’d better do some marketing”. This isn’t smart marketing either because then you’ll be so desperate to get new clients you’ll do anything and quick!

Preparing a marketing plan is your first step. You might need to conduct some market research to determine who your ideal client is, what their needs are, how you can meet their needs, where you can find them, how you will reach them, and the daily activities you need to do to keep your funnel full. If you know the answers to these questions then you’re ahead of the game (BUT ONLY AS LONG AS YOU ARE REALISTIC WITH THOSE ANSWERS). Some of these activities may include networking, speaking, advertising, seminars, teleclasses, and e-zines. All of these are active forms of marketing that take your time, unless you can delegate some of the activities or automate them. Here are just a few general suggestions to consider when developing your marketing funnel (funnel = your database and people you will be continually marketing to):

- Make sure and do at least one marketing activity each day.

- Set specific marketing & money goals each year; review and adjust quarterly.

- Always be brainstorming new ideas; write them down and keep a file, review quarterly.

- Always have marketing materials with you in your car – cards, flyers, brochures, postcards – you never know when you might be able to pass them out or put them on display!

- Always include your company contact info (and possibly a business card or promotion piece) with any invoice, card, mailer or email.

- Always follow up with each person you meet out networking within a week at most.

- Keep an organized database in your computer of everyone you know; categorizing them by hot, warm or cold prospect, client or referral source at the very least

- Develop a newsletter by mail or email to stay “on top of people’s minds” so they will remember to refer you – if you don’t remind them about you, they WILL forget about you!

Bullets, Blood, and Glory: an Expose on the Glorification of Real and Fictional Murderers

Bullets, Blood, and Glory: An Expose On The Glorification of Real and Fictional Murderers

Violence, no matter how much some people try to deny it, is an integral part of our society, and will remain so, for better or for worse. It is used to protect, it is abused through many means, and the media capitalizes it on. However, this is not an essay about protection or the sheer amount of violence in the media, but about the people who make those who kill into Robin Hoods, Anti-Heroes, and people who are to be pitied. From Jack the Ripper in reality to the Boondock Saints and the Punisher in fiction, it had become common to make kills legitimate and body counts testimonies to genius. Let’s have a look:

Jack the Ripper – Dead but not forgotten. Prowling the foggy streets of London for reasons of his own, the most infamous serial killer of all went about killing prostitutes and was never caught. Jack may just be the most intriguing killer of the past 200 years, with numerous books detailing the theories surrounding the methods and the identity of the killer. As a few people have pointed out, however, if he had gotten caught, it is doubtful that so much would be written of him. His identity has been theorized to be a butcher, an American actor, a woman, etc. Somehow he or she managed to elude capture and the killings stopped. Though famous stories abound that he was caught, including a tale told to me that a man being hung for murder said “I’m Jack the…” right before the lever was pulled, it was never conclusively proven that he or she was caught, and their fate remains unknown. Unfortunately, with this curiosity came glory, as the killer was personified as being a highly intelligent killer worthy of admiration for his ability to escape justice. Even during the killings, Jack was noted to be a creature of respect, one who scared children and caused women of the night to fear for their lives, because they never knew if they would be next (spooky, no?).

The Boondock Saints – This movie and its glorification of vigilante justice will probably cause me the most trouble with you readers. These erstwhile Punishers (a character I take on later) are at first two Irish-Catholic brothers who take on the local Russian mob in Boston. The only reason they even start doing this is because they fought a few Russian enforcers in their favorite bar when the mobsters want the bar to shut down. The Russians attempt revenge, the brothers manage to kill them, they hide the money and guns they find on them, and things escalate. They kill X number of people, then the Russians get their best killer out of prison, it turns out to be the boys’ father, and in the end they choose to take on crime as a family. Of course, people will argue that it is much more complicated than that, but I’m not writing a movie review, I’m addressing the glorification of the characters. These brothers seem to justify their crimes (you heard me), by saying a family prayer: “And shepherds we shall be, for thee my Lord for thee, Power hath descended forth from thy hand, that our feet may swiftly carry out thy command, we shall flow a river forth to thee, and teeming with souls shall it ever be. In nomine patris, et filiiet spiritus sancti,” and in one case they place pennies on the eyes of their victims ala Greek mythology (paying the boatman to ferry a soul to Hades). So the lesson seems to be: kill, pray, and do it again. This is actually addressed at the end of the movie in a fake “on the street” type segment where people voice their opinions on the family’s activities, with people both supporting and decrying their actions. I would have been one of the men calling them what they are: murderers.

The Punisher – I could write page after page about this character, because he’s one of my favorite comic book characters as well as one of the most fertile subjects for this topic. I’m going to leave the movies out of this, because the comics are a much deeper part of the character. For those who don’t know about the character, he was originally a hitman in Spider-Man, but afterward he developed into Frank Castle, a Vietnam veteran whose family was killed in the crossfire of a mafia hit. Frank manages to survive, but he grows disenchanted with the justice system when it fails to bring the killers down. He decides that the guilty need to be punished, and thus his new persona is born. He doesn’t capture villains ala Batman, another mainstream character without superpowers, instead choosing to take the route of acting, as the cliché goes, as “judge, jury, and executioner”. He is careful not to hurt those who he thinks of as innocent, for lack of a better word on my part, but is not above torture, manipulation, theft, and fighting dirty. However, the interesting thing about the Punisher is that while is that while he’s sort of a sympathetic character, Punisher MAX (the most realistic version of the Punisher), shows Frank as an unrepentant killer with a body count that goes beyond horrific. That IS what he is, and most of his “hardcore” fans would probably agree. Garth Ennis, an influential Punisher writer, noted that the character is “…well, obsessive, insane, twisted enough to happily mow down forty or fifty people in an afternoon.” Other people who worked on the character thought of him as a person who doesn’t have a complete grip on reality. The point here is that although the character is sometimes shown to be pitiable and (although you can’t blame the character) has inspired people to create groups on the Internet that support his actions (along with the Boondock Saints’). However, the big difference between the two is that the Punisher is shown as being cold-hearted and merciless, while the Saints are portrayed as having an unfathomable sort of happiness in what they do. In the end, although the Punisher is an intriguing character, he shouldn’t be confused with a hero (although he is capable of doing things that are heroic).

What exactly is my point here? I watch violent movies, I play violent videogames, and I write violent stories. However, my point here is that a line needs to be drawn between a murderer and a hero. If a hero kills (as they have in almost all media) it shouldn’t be a full on massacre justified by someone they care about dying or something of the like. If the hero kills, it should devastate him or her, not give them any sort of happiness or fulfillment. A murderer is a murderer, no matter the reasoning behind it. With bullets and blood there does not always come glory, regardless of how glossy the blood is made or the reasoning behind the murders.

Different Types of Ammunition

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

There are many different types of ammunition and sometimes selecting the right ones can be extremely difficult. Usually the design and style of the ammunition will determine the purpose for different situations. In this article, we will discuss a few different types of ammunition and uses for them and also the reasons they can benefit you on specific jobs or hunts.

Handguns are sometimes used for hunting, but are mostly used for recreation and personal protection. Handguns are an extremely effective tool for self protection, but choosing the right ammunition is just as important as choosing the actual handgun. Defensive ammunition is designed to expand within the target rather than going all the way through the target.

Hollow points are the most commonly used defensive ammunition on the market. When fired, the pressure created in the hollowed tip when penetrating the target forces the tip to expand outwards typically resembling a mushroom. The advantage of the hollow point over other ammunition is the decreased penetration of the target for the safety of others around you. If firing rounds off in your home or apartment with other family members in the next room, penetration is a concern as it could easily travel through walls, potentially injuring your loved ones. Hollow point ammunition is safer for all parties concerned including your attacker as he is more likely to go down from one or two rounds of hollow point than six or seven rounds of other types of ammunition.

Frangible ammunition, a lot like hollow points, are also extremely effective self defense ammunition; they have the same hollowed end but are filled with tiny metal beads and covered by a polymer end cap. They are designed to break apart when they hit walls or hard surfaces preventing ricochets during close quarter combat.

FMJ (Full Metal Jacket) ammunition doesn’t expand and is made to penetrate, making this a bad choice for use as self defense ammunition. FMJ are used often by the military mostly because they hardly ever jam up making them a more reliable choice.

Shotgun ammunition has basic types of loads: buckshot, birdshot, and slug loads and are used most commonly today for sport shooting and hunting small and big game animals. The choice of caliber depends on the type of situation the firearm is being used for. Shotguns have various different uses; law enforcement officials and military personnel use them for self protection and long range shooting, sport shooters use them for clay and target shooting, and of course they are used for hunting lots of different sized animals such as bear, elk, deer, prairie dogs, rabbits, turkey, and many other types of game.

Buckshot is loaded with large diameter lead balls used for large game hunting and self defense. It is also used in riot and combat situations by police and military because this load has a lot of stopping power. Birdshot is loaded with smaller diameter pellets and is mostly used for hunting game birds. Shot size is selected not only for distance, but for game being hunted as the shot must reach the target with enough force to penetrate and kill the animal. Lead shot is the cheapest, but environmental restrictions have more hunters turning to steel shot.  Stopping power is poor with steel shot and it is only recommended for personal defense in the home. Slug shots are a solid lead shell with enormous stopping power and rifle-like performance, by firing one large projectile rather than many smaller ones. Unlike the other loads, the slug loads must be aimed like a rifle or handgun; this load ruins the shotgun’s major benefit of superior hit probability. This load is also used in law enforcement and military as a reasonable substitute for a rifle when the targets are at medium ranges.

When selecting ammunition, try to keep in mind these useful tips; American-made is the best. Stay away from foreign-made ammunition and hand loads; use manufacturer-loaded cartridges only. Here are some examples of name brand ammunition that we recommend: Federal ammunition, Cor-Bon ammunition, Hornady, Remington ammunition, Winchester or CCI ammunition.

The most common question that gets asked is: What type of ammunition to use? If you find yourself asking this question a lot, there are some different ways to find this information rather than asking someone at your local gun shop and later finding out that he has no idea what he’s talking about. Do some research on your own and find out what is best suited for your shooting needs. This is best way to find out which types of ammunition will work best for you.
